Here to share my stories in hopes to inspire athletes to fall further in love with the sport. Of course running at a high level comes with ups and downs so I hope these stories also help and validate those who are struggling and provide insight through my experiences on how to navigate them.

Finding Balance

Balancing school, life and sport can feel like an impossible challenge. Especially when you’re constantly being pulled in every direction. Letting even the smallest part of any of these control you can lead to downfall in the others. Each can be consuming and stressful but finding a way to separate and balance all three is so important if you want to be successful in any of them.

Trust The Process

This topic has been sitting in my drafts since I started this blog (7 months ago). A topic I've so badly wanted to talk about but until recently haven't fought my own battles enough to write about. There's so much I could say about trust, however I think the biggest is the consuming pressure and worry over things that you either CAN'T control or SHOULDN'T be controlled. Both instilling trust in yourself and in the process can set you free from those worries and allow you to put energy towards the things in life that actually deserves your effort.

Choosing to Survive or THRIVE

Life is full of decisions, will you decide to allow the unhealthy obsessions consume your well-being, barely scraping by, or will you choose to put yourself first to reach your fullest potential? It’s hard to balance life as a student-athlete with the intense pressure to perform and the consuming time of your sport. The perspective of what matters can warp, raising performance above well-being and long-term health. Learning to find perspective and balance is important to allowing yourself to thrive in such a high stress environment like college athletics.

Team Culture

What is culture? Why is it important? How do you build it? Something I never thought about in high school but have recently learned to care a lot about. Over my years at Purdue, we've worked hard to foster a positive, supportive, and fun atmosphere by focusing on our culture in and out of practice. I wanted to talk about what I've learned, and why it’s important.

Regaining Pre-Race Confidence

Since it’s cross country season, we finally can start talking about racing. Since starting college athletics, I found my nerves building to...annoying levels, which stripped the fun out of racing and replaced it with intense pressure. Sometimes, nerves can be good—at a certain level—but at some point, they make you tense up and keep you from reaching your full potential in a race. This past year I worked hard to shake these nerves and loosen up on race day. So, here's what I've learned.

Transitioning to College

Since the school year is right around the corner I wanted to talk about the transition from high school to college. This is barely athlete specific, because in my experience, the change in academics and living on my own was the hardest part. I feel like adults always talk about college to incoming freshman like it’s the best time ever, which it can be, but no one ever talks about how incredibly hard it is. Maybe it's implied, I mean college classes are going to be hard, but I think it’s impossible to comprehend the amount of change that happens. So, I wanted to share my incredibly rough transition to college and how I came out the other side.

Uncertainty, Acceptance & Patience

Uncertainty, acceptance, patience. To me, all these words go under the same umbrella, practicing and improving all three of these things allow you to enjoy your journey in running and allow you to navigate life's challenges without getting caught up in their nuances. It's a topic that's been on my mind a lot given recent events but also something I feel is such an important skill when navigating a collegiate running career as well as challenges life throws at you.

Escaping the Comparison Trap

Every time I tell coach I'm comparing myself to...anything, he hits me with the "comparison is the thief of joy", I roll my eyes every time he says that, BUT he's right so here's what I've learned. Whether it's your past self, or others around you, comparison is never the answer. Comparison and correlation is part of human nature, we can't change that, but we can learn to accept where we are and why playing the comparison game will only hurt you in the long run.

Numbers Suck

I weigh XXX, the one who runs a mile in X:XX, "Ugh I still have X reps left I'll never make it". Numbers can become overbearing and can make you feel like that's all that matters. In reality there is so much more to the sport and time is merely the end goal. This piece is a little long so I broke it up into 3 different categories in case you only care about one or two of them. The first one is fueling, dealing with weight, calories, all those fun things, the second is time comparison in races, the third is counting reps and distance in workouts and races.

Defining Your "Why"

Coach is known for his inspirational pre-practice speeches. Sometimes they may free drawn out, repetitive, or boring but when thinking about them later, and I guess I can see why he tells them. So this is going to be a classic John Oliver speech but also what I've taken and done with it over the past two years.

Progress: Its Not Linear

What is the definition of progress? How do you measure it? What happens when you don't progress as expected? When starting college I hit a ton of unexpected barriers and frustrations which stalled my progress. Here I'll share my initial reaction, how I dealt with it and what helped.
